Problem

Area Youth Ministry relies on staff and volunteers to mentor young people in safe, supportive environments.

However, many volunteers lack formal training in youth protection policies, and inconsistent practices put both students and adults at risk. Without clear guidance, volunteers may unintentionally engage in unsafe practices such as meeting one-on-one with minors, driving them alone, or engaging in inappropriate communication.

This can lead to legal, ethical, and reputational risks for the organization, while undermining trust with parents and students.

Safety Compliance Training for Working with Youth

Solution

I designed a scenario-based Articulate Storyline course that immerses volunteers in realistic mentorship, transportation, virtual, and overnight situations.

Learners practice decision-making, receive immediate feedback, and reflect on best practices for keeping minors safe. The course combines interactivity, clear policies, and practical tips to ensure volunteers are confident and compliant before serving.

Clarify the Goal

Action Mapping

Through conversations with the SME and extensive research on best practices in interacting with youth, I developed an action map to identify the high priority actions that the learner should perform in order to adhere to AYM’s safety guidelines.

By collaborating with AYM Program Coordinators and SME’s, I was able to narrow down actionable items to the three most critical actions AYM Mentors and Volunteers need to follow to maintain safety standards.

  1. Follow the 2-Adult Rule consistently and maintain safe communication

  2. Recognize and model appropriate vs. inappropriate interactions

  3. Apply safe transportation practices

After further conversations, I determined with the SME that guidelines related to safety during trips and events would be best developed as a separate e-learning course in the future. This allowed us to keep the current course focused and manageable within the time constraint, and still maintain an optimal number of actionable items for learners to practice.

Craft the Solution

Text-Based Storyboard

After identifying the key actions, I crafted a text-based storyboard centered around realistic scenarios used to train mentors and volunteers to adhere to safety guidelines while working with youth.

Corresponding to the three key actions, the training pauses at three critical moments that prompt the learners to intervene in the situation. At each juncture, learners choose from three possible actions, each leading to unique consequences affecting youth, mentors, and the organization as a whole.

I also introduced a mentor character ‘Susanne’ to immerse learners in an AYM Volunteer or Mentor role while providing guidance and on-demand assistance throughout the experience.

Visual Mockups

For the visual design of the project, I began with curating a mood board with diverse sources of inspiration.

Using both realistic photos of classrooms and parks informed the scenes and props, and illustrations influenced the overall visual style and color scheme.

I then developed a style guide in Figma to create visual specs and maintain consistency of teh graphical elements throughout the learning experience. To create a calming tone to match this safety training, I chose a color scheme that was both saturated and soothing, sans-serif font families that are elegant and approachable, and character sets that are sophisticated and friendly.

I also designed a range of expressions and gestures for the mentor character Susanne, enabling learners to visually perceive the reaction for their choices while still remaining encouraging.

Finally, I created and iterated on wireframes and mockups in Figma to refine the layout for each slide type.

This process allowed me to explore different design approaches and optimize user interactions, ensuring a seamless and intuitive experience for the learners.

Full Development

Using feedback from the prototype, I developed the final product in Articulate Storyline, piecing together the content and triggers. To ensure optimal functionality and user experience, I tested the product with users extensively before delivery.
